Internship, Fall 2007
My Comrade Magazine • http://www.mycomrade.com
My Comrade magazine is an alternative arts and culture magazine founded in 1987. Internship duties are web programming and information architecture. Goals for this semester:
- Improve usability of content management system for editors, writers, and other contributers.
- Implement a photo management system for the blog.
- Design new web zine layout.
- Editor page from old site redirects to “about-us” page on new site.
- The old blog banner has been updated with a URL to the new blog. (This was done because we did not want to take the old wordpress content offline. And sometimes old blog posts show up in search results.)

We talked about ways to move forward with creating the My Comrade web zine. Les wants to change the publishing model of the magazine from bulk print and distribute to print-on-demand. This provides an interesting challenge. How can we create a web zine that prints nicely? Or that prints in an interesting enough way that readers would want to pay to have a printed version mailed to them. We have tossed around ideas of annuals being available for purchase.
For now, our priority is the web zine. Over the next week I am to quickly mock up a web zine and we will start an iterative design process. The goal is to have a web zine available quarterly. Readers can easily read past issues, or purchase printed annuals, collections, or something similar.

Short term projects
- Buy and read Textpattern book.
- Redirect old blog URL to new one. Update old blog banner with new blog URL so people can easily get there if they find an old blog post from an internet search.
- On individual articles, put prev/next navigation at the top of the article just below the title. Remove “Filed Under” and at the bottom of the article, output categories as “See Related Articles.”
- The “editor” page from the old site should redirect to new site. Redirect other old pages that are found through search results.
- Statistics report: which parts of the site are getting more visits than others? Check gallery page stats.
Long Term projects
- Improve back-end usability for Les. Can there be more than 2 categories per article? Can the images details page display their URL and current dimensions? Can we dynamically manipulate images in the backend? How can we get image info while writing an article without leaving the page?
- Use a versioning system for making changes to the web site so I can easily go back and fix things that I break. Because I have broken things before.
- Install and customize a shopping cart system.
- Find a way to streamline the gallery process. Right now there are too many steps needed to create and manage gallery images.
- Install a mailing list management system, perhaps one line Mailman.
- Add subtle animations. Make the comment box expand when you click to comment.
- Click to email article: create a way for users to do this. Animate like comment box.
- How do we alter comment dates after they have been created?
Pending from Les
- Copy for the past issue gallery entry for issue #13.
